Each week, Palmetto State Weddings will introduce our readers to one of the talented vendors from around our beautiful state through the Spotlight On series. If you're interested in being featured, please contact us.
When you've planned an entire wedding down to the details, the last thing that you want to overlook is your bridal hair and makeup. Those finishing touches are just another way you can showcase your personality on your big day, so you'll need to find a makeup artist who understand your vision.
When Ashley Riddle started Up Dos for I Dos 14 years ago, she was a bride as well as a stylist, and quickly saw the need for a mobile wedding day beauty service. Instead of rushing to the salon with your bridal party on the (already busy) morning of the wedding, wouldn't it make more sense to have the stylists come to the bride and her friends?
From that simple but ingenious question came her successful wedding hair and makeup team, a group of over 30 artists who are all licensed by their local state board of cosmetology. They serve South Carolina as well as Maryland, D.C., Delaware, and Virginia, and they're always on the move to find new bridal parties to beautify!
Today, we're sitting down with Ashley to discuss her jump into entrepreneurship, how her company gives back to the community, and what every bride should know when booking her day-of hair stylist and makeup artist.
Tell us a little bit about your path to success. What led you to this profession? Did you always want to be in the wedding industry?
When planning my own wedding, I realized that there were little options for on-site hair and makeup. I wanted a company/stylist who specialized in weddings alone and could help deliver a phenomenal service while keeping the energy relaxed.
My career began behind the chair working in salons. I always loved when brides would land in my chair and allow me to be a part of their special day.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the SC wedding industry?
Network! Network! Network!
What's one thing you wish all of your clients knew before walking into your store?
Trust our expertise! When we have a client's trust, we can fully engage and discuss all options for hair and makeup.
If we suggest a certain style won't look great or last, it's because we've already tested it out and want to ensure a bride's look will not only be flattering but also long lasting.
What's one thing most people don't know about you?
I started the company when I was 20 and have been self-employed the majority of my life. A lot of my experience has been self-taught through trial and error.
What is the best part about working/living in South Carolina? Are you a native? If so, what's made you stay? If you're a transplant, what attracted you to this state?
The palm trees, warm weather and every street of Charleston is a huge positive to being in the area. I'm attracted to the history and architecture.
What has been your best moment working in the SC wedding industry so far?
Giving back to the community and being involved in Charleston Mom Prom (supports Cystic Fibrosis) and MUSC's Modeling for Impact.
