Lauren + Chris: Sunflower Farm Wedding + Surprise Vow Renewal

Sometimes, a styled shoot doesn't turn out exactly as the organizers wanted. In this case, the sunflower farm wedding styled shoot in McConnell, South Carolina, turned into a surprise vow renewal!

For Lauren and Chris' 5th wedding anniversary, they agreed to model for photographer Jessica Drew's sunflower shoot. However, Jessica found out something about her model duo: "In talking with Lauren, I discovered that she didn't have any pictures she liked from their wedding. She wanted to wear her wedding dress and she wanted to renew their vows. It turned out to be an intimate, lovely vow renewal!"

We can't think of a better way to celebrate 5 years of wedded bliss than a frolic through a sunflower field and a chance to share sweet moments with the one who means the most.

"For our vow renewal, we wanted something simple yet beautiful.

"Our wedding [5 years ago] was small, simple and special, yet we did not have any professional photos of our day. We wanted our vow renewal to be similar but with many photos to capture our emotions.

"I wore my wedding dress which has a very vintage feel to it so I liked the idea of eucalyptus and white flowers to go along with that antiqued look. The sunflower theme added a fun and spunky but to it all.

One thing that wasn't planned, but that we loved was that it rained at our vow renewal. It is considered good luck in some cultures for it to rain on your wedding day, and we also had a light shower on our wedding day 5 years ago."

The great thing about having an outdoor location like that is there’s not much need for decoration, nature did the hard work! We used some complimentary colors on the tables and let the sunflowers do the rest of the work.

How did you choose your wedding day look?

"When we originally got married, I picked out my dress because I wanted something vintage and classic but with a twist. My dress is an a line dusty rose dress with ivory lace overlay. It has a v neck and a bit of a flared skirt.

"Since our wedding, I've lost a lot of weight so I had my dress taken in. I had [my seamstress] take out some of the flare in the skirt, narrow the shoulder straps and add a thin ribbon belt.

"Chris wore a very classic grey suit. He decided to forego the jacket and wore the vest alone which really completed the look. He also wore brown dress shoes and a thin navy blue tie. I think he couldn't have been more handsome."

How did you personalize your vow renewal?

"I absolutely love how my flowers turned out. My bouquet was full of eucalyptus which is my favorite as well as white roses and some other beautiful flowers and plants.

"My hair stylist also used some of those pieces to accent my hair which tied it all in.

"[Overall,] ur renewal was simple and that was my favorite part. It wasn't about all the stuff that would stress me out getting planned like music and good.

"We had some simple Frank Sinatra style music playing and kept the focus on the love behind it all."

It’s easy to get caught up in wanting every detail to be just right on your big day, but when you look back you’re going to remember the people, the feelings, and all of the joy. Just soak up all the love around you.
