Greenville-based baker Christine Wiethop has been serving up cookies, macarons, cakes, and more to lucky couples in the 2.5 years since she opened Baking Sweet Scents.
Today, we're taking a peek into her kitchen to learn more about her baking inspiration, how she got started in the wedding industry, and her proudest moment as a baker.
Tell us a little bit about your path to success. Did you always want to be in the wedding industry?
I started baking as a child. My family hosted parties regularly, and making the desserts became my sweet spot. My mom would hand me a dessert recipe she had in mind and say, "It'd be nice if you could make this..." I quickly realized I was up for the challenge.
A few macaron fundraisers for local soccer teams led me to launch my business website in September 2015. Then I filled many macaron, toffee, cookie, and pie orders that first holiday season.
A friend of a friend asked me to bake cupcakes for her wedding the following Spring - that's when I stepped into the wedding industry. From welcome bag goodies and grooms cakes to wedding cakes and dessert bars, I ended up baking for 16 weddings last year.
I didn't intend to bake for weddings when I launched the Baking Sweet Scents website, but now it's one of my favorite parts of my business.
If you had to share one piece of advice for someone who was just starting out in the SC wedding industry, what would it be?
Enjoy every precious moment with the sweet couples you meet! Organization helps, too, but the time with the bride and groom is the most special part.
What's one thing that you wish your clients knew before booking you?
I take my business as a wedding baker very seriously. I confirm the details and put them in the contract, and my goal is to bring the bride and groom's wedding dessert vision to life on their special day. I want the couple and all of their wedding guests to taste happiness!
What's a surprising fact that most people don't know about you?
I'm naturally introverted, but I love working with engaged couples.
What is the best part about working and living in South Carolina?
South Carolina is beautiful. It's a place where we see all four seasons. It's also home to Southern hospitality, which is unbeatable!
My family moved here when I was in high school. I moved away after college for a couple of years, but I returned to be near people I love.
What has been your best moment working in the SC wedding industry so far?
It's tough to choose one moment, but I love getting positive feedback from couples and their guests after their wedding day.
After one wedding, the mother of the bride sent a message saying how delicious the wedding cake was and that there was not a slice left!
