These two weren't afraid to have fun with their wedding, and we love that about them!
For their Lace House wedding in the heart of Columbia, South Carolina, Allie and Jay focused on their favorite things from Star Wars to Harry Potter.
The couple's fun, whimsical side goes all the way back to their meeting place: the EdVenture Children's Museum. Jay was working there as a manager when Allie returned to Columbia after living in Boston for several years. Their work relationship soon led to a friendship, but there was more in store for the two of them.
"We were great friends for years, until a party at our good friend, Dr. Kathie's, house. That night something just clicked, and we've been inseparable ever since!" says bride Allie.
Prosecco, Pennies, and Proposals
"Allison and I got engaged on November 3rd at a friends lake house dock as the sun went down over Lake Murray. It was one of our favorite places to go as it was situated on a point and offered nearly 360 degree views of the lake.
"We had seen the solar eclipse there during the summer with friends, and I decided that it would make a private place for a proposal.
"I had secured the ring weeks earlier, a beautiful Morganite stone in a rose gold setting. I asked Allison if she would go watch the sunset at the lake and we could grab some picnic items on the way. Of course, she agreed, and, as it was already nearing sunset we hopped in the car and headed to the point.
"We stopped at a Publix and picked up a box of chicken fingers and two bottles of cheap Prosecco and raced to beat the sun. We arrived with plenty of time to settle in and all seemed like any other casual date night.
"As I am a bit of a prankster, I had put a few pennies I found in the car in my left pocket. as we sat and talked I would occasionally let one roll out of my pocket along the decking only to slip into the lake below.
"Of course, Allison, being incredibly perceptive, began to worry that a proposal might be coming this evening and was becoming more and more anxious about the sound of what could easily be confused for the clinking of a ring falling out of my pocket into the depths of the lake.
"It was all part of my plan! I eventually let her off the hook and proposed to her as the last few rays of sun peaked over the watery horizon.
"She said 'yes!' and we both had a good laugh over the "penny trick." We spent the next few hours drinking Prosecco and talking about our plans for the future."
The Lovely Lace House
After their engagement, Allie and Jay knew exactly where to turn to start making plans for their special day. Says bride Allie, " In May of 2017, we visited the Lace House for the first time. We weren't even engaged yet, but as soon as we walked into the gardens we knew that's where we would get married when the time came."
Their approach to the property allowed the gardens and main building to shine. "The space is so naturally beautiful that we wanted all of the elements of our wedding to reflect the simple beauty of nature- down to our owl cake topper," remembers Allie. They had a little help finalizing the details: "We left all decor ideas to the creativity of Carolina Event Services, and they did a magnificent job!
Perfecting the Wedding Day Look
Once their location was settled and they had a vision for their big day, it was time for the bride and groom to decide what they would wear.
Jay settled on a classic suit with a baby blue tie to coordinate with the bridesmaids, while Allie wanted something that would go with her rose gold earrings and shoes.
She remembers: "The wedding dress I chose was actually the first one I tried on. I was super nervous to go dress shopping, but I tried this one on and got teary as soon as I looked in the mirror. My mom cried. My sister laughed at both of us. I tried on several more just to make sure, but this dress was perfect for the garden wedding of my dreams!"
The dress was perfectly complemented by a Christmas surprise from Jay. He had gifted Allie with a vintage gold brooch that had an original engraving of her new married initials.
In addition, "We [threw] in a couple of personalized touches- like Star Wars pins on the boutonnieres and lace from my mother's wedding veil when she married my dad in 1982," says Allie.
