What started as a treat for her daughter is now a thriving business in the Beaufort area!

Jessica Kent, owner of Bloom Custom Cakes, has been serving up cakes and cupcakes to admiring brides and grooms for almost a year now, but her cake making history goes much deeper than that.

Since the late 1990s, Jessica’s baked goods have delighted her friends and family who were lucky enough to get a bite. Since her first foray into cake making, this talented baker has moved from Aruba to the United States and gone into business to share her creations with even more people.

Today, we’re sitting down with Jessica to learn more about her journey to entrepreneurship, a bit more about her personal history, and how she made the jump from home baker to wedding cake designer.

Tell us a little bit about your path to success. What led you to this profession? Did you always want to be in the wedding industry?

It all started with my 5 year old daughter's birthday cake in 1999. We were living in Aruba, no custom bakeries! I took matters in to my own hands and made her a clown cake.

I've been baking ever since! Five years ago I started working with professionals and learned the business, and now I have launched my own venture and am thrilled to be a part of the wedding industry!

What's one thing you wish all of your clients knew before booking you?

That I care. I care passionately about an excellent product, outstanding service, and that everyone I serve walks away happy.

What's one thing most people don't know about you?

That I am from Hawaii! Aloha!

What is the best part about working/living in South Carolina? Are you a native? If so, what's made you stay? If you're a transplant, what attracted you to this state?

I am not a native to SC. I have lived many places and traveled a lot. The kindness of the people, the beauty of the Lowcountry, and good old fashioned Southern values are why we have chosen this as our forever home.

What has been your best moment working in the SC wedding industry so far?

The first wedding I did was last July out at Parris Island. The mother of the bride said they were all so happy with the cake(s) and told me that their wedding guests were going back for second and third servings of the wedding cake! That pretty much says it all!
